The Bettison Sikes Living Estate Sale
A walk through history…..
We invite you to browse through this very special selection of items gathered through several lifetimes.
Our client has lovingly saved and preserved pieces that are like a window into several eras of American life.
There will be phases of this online sale and auction, and we will provide limited by appointment viewing to our customers who are serious about particular items. ( No holds without payment).
Our client's father, Miles Lehman (M.L.) Sikes Jr. was a decorated member of the 8th Airforce "Flying Tigers" who flew in WWII campaigns with noted achievements.
He graduated from Flight school in 1943 (class 43-K) at the former Air field in Blytheville Arkansas.
Among so many other things, we have the beautifully bound program from that day, which invites you to imagine yourself there, following along the schedule of events.
M.L. served our country bravely and proudly through to his retirement from the Defense Depot in Memphis.
During Lieutenant Sikes' stationing in Europe Mrs. Doris his wife, became an educated lover of the arts and attended auctions and estate sales throughout the UK, Germany and Belgium.
She had an eye for the decorative arts and was drawn to Asian housewares. She enjoyed acquiring pieces that she felt would be heirlooms for her children and beyond.
You will see a very rare and unique Pewter Spice Caddy from China, and a chair dating to the late 1700s fashioned after some of the earliest chair designs in human history.
All the while Mr. Sikes was a devoted and treasured father, he went on to become an accomplished jewelry hobbiest, and he never ceased his quest for greatness in everything he did including nurturing his family.
Uniforms, buttons and badges, patches and letters. Official documents and certificates.
A complete diary collection with his daily observations for the years of his service and beyond into M.L. Sikes' golden years.
The capsule of artifacts from Lieutenant Sikes' service history is so vast and impressive.
It is our desire to see this catalogue remain in its complete state because the story it tells as a whole makes it greater than the sum of its parts.
We also look into a part of American history through our clients North Eastern family.
Her grandmother was from a Mass family that was one of the early migrators to Florida to establish orange groves for international export. In coming phases of this sale you will see Boston Coin Silver Flatware stamped 1826, chandeliers from grand Victorian homes in the Northeast, and early photography showing these characters in the styles of their times. Antique photos tell such a fun story of Florida when it was in its heyday of drawing northerners down for the sun and the financial possibilities.
Just like always, this is more than a sale to us; we have absorbed this families story by walking through history with them, and we look forward to your feedback and questions.
